Description
This is the first “moss” rose. It originated as a sport of ‘Centifolia’, also known as ‘Cabbage Rose’. It is pale pink with dark moss and very fragrant. The buds have the centifolia sepals and are covered densely with moss. The American Rose Society Encyclopedia of Roses has a good summary of the sports originating with ‘Centifolia’. Those, which are included on our list, are ‘Spong’, R. centifolia variegata #Village Maid#, and ‘Chapeau du Napoleon’ #’Crested Moss’#, as well as ‘Centifolia’ itself. AKA: ‘Common Moss’,’Old Pink Moss’
Unknown before 1696.
